Sylvie Léget is a French-Swiss artist-photographer based in Geneva. A graduate in art history, she specialized in photography at the ICP, International Center of Photography, in New York. Her artistic vision is strongly influenced by a previous experience in the humanitarian field, which has shaped the way she perceives humankind. 

In a committed approach, both documentary and plastic, her artistic practice focuses on intimacy, women's life transitions, issues of memory, migration and urban solitude. Sylvie mainly develops long-term projects, based on in-depth research processes. Texts and sound sometimes extend or dialogue with her images.

Her first full-length project, Giving Birth in Exile, dedicated to migration as seen through the prism of maternity, was exhibited at the Rencontres photographiques d'Arles (Manuel Rivera Ortiz Foundation), as part of the Festival du film et forum international sur les droits humains (FIFDH) and at the No'Photo biennial in Geneva. This project earned her a nomination for the Prix Pictet 2023 and selection for the International Women in Photography Awards 2023.

Sylvie is currently engaged in artistic research into the fragility of memory. With the support of the City of Geneva, she completed a residency in Cambodia, where she confronted her memories of an early humanitarian mission with today's reality. Le vol des chauves-souris la nuit questions the persistence or erasure of traces, and evokes the Cambodian genocide with contemporary resonance.

In parallel to her personal approach, she has curated several exhibitions and launched a vast project of artist residencies within a Geneva social institution.  Her work can be found in private collections.

Sylvie Léget est une artiste photographe franco-suisse basée à Genève. Diplômée en histoire de l’art, elle se spécialise à l'International Center of Photography, à New York. Son regard artistique est fortement marqué par une expérience antérieure dans l’humanitaire, qui a façonné le regard qu’elle porte sur l’humain.

L’écrit et le son viennent parfois prolonger ou dialoguer avec ses images. 

Son premier projet au long court, Giving Birth in Exile, consacré à la migration vue à travers le prisme de la maternité, a notamment été exposé aux Rencontres photographiques d'Arles (fondation Manuel Rivera Ortiz), dans le cadre du Festival du film et forum international sur les droits humains (FIFDH) et à la biennale No'Photo à Genève. Ce projet lui a valu d’être nominée pour le Prix Pictet 2023 et d’être sélectionnée pour l’International Women in Photography Awards 2023.      

Sylvie poursuit actuellement une recherche artistique autour de la fragilité de la mémoire. Grâce au soutien de la Ville de Genève, elle a effectué une résidence au Cambodge où elle confronte ses souvenirs d'une première mission humanitaire à la réalité d'aujourd'hui. Le vol des chauves-souris la nuit interroge la persistance ou l'effacement des traces et évoque avec une résonance contemporaine le génocide cambodgien .

Parallèlement à sa pratique artistique, Sylvie a assuré le commissariat de plusieurs expositions et lancé un vaste projet de résidences d'artiste au sein d'une institutuion publique genevoise. Ses travaux font partie de collections privées.
